9-11 Film Response

This film relates to 9-11 by using an idea which is, “with tragedy comes revitalization.” This is true because as the towers fell (creating tragedy), the old man’s flowers, which symbolizes his wives spirit, were able to grow. The towers fell, so his wives spirit could be revitalized. They were able to grow because the falling of the towers made it possible for sunlight to emerge onto the man’s, so the flowers were able to grow with the addition of sunlight. Light is used to represent clarity by “awakening” the old man. The light does this by ending his state of denial that the darkness symbolized. When the towers fell and the light finally reached his room, it not only revitalized his spirit, but also awakened him to how his wife is really gone.

I Hear America Dragging On

I hear America dragging on through the work day.
The man slamming his front door at 8:30 in the morning;
The rumble of a car’s engine as the man turns the key and sighs.
The steady popping as tires move over a gravel driveway;
The honking of car horns answering each other in a busy intersection,
The screeching of brakes in stop and go traffic on the interstate,
The typing sounds that are emitted from his colleagues cubicles.
The unlocking of his car door at the end of the work day,
The man takes his key out of the car and closes the garage door.
The only reason he continues this monotonous pace is to put his three children through college so their horizons are brighter than his ever was.

Free Choice Book Response

The certain piece of text that helps us understand the true meaning of the book would be in the fourth chapter. This piece of text would be, “You are hereby directed to present yourself for Armed Forces Physical Examination…” This quote shows how the whole plot of the book began. This is true because this piece of text is the first sentence of a drafting letter. Before one of the characters received this letter, the four friends made a pact that if one of them was drafted they would all volunteer. By having this one important piece of text, the plot is set up for the rest of the book. It also helps us understand the book by showing that this book is based off of the Vietnam War. You can tell it is based off the Vietnam War because; it was one of the only wars with a draft.

Life Lesson Response

Last year, I received the unfortunate news that I was able to be eligible for Spanish 3. Before the year started, I thought it was going to be just like Spanish 2, easy enough that I could make it through the year without paying attention. When the year began I found out that it would be nothing like Spanish 2. The first thing our teacher told us was that the first class would be the only time we would here her speak English. The class was so hard that in the first week we had lost half the class to dropouts. The people in my class and my teacher made the class somewhat bearable. But then again, I was still scared to go into class each day. By the time the first report card came out, I realized that I wasn’t doing as bad as I thought. I was actually not doing very badly, I received a C-. When the second quarter started, the teacher started to speak English when she would explain various subjects. By doing this, she made the subjects easier to understand. Occasionally, I would get a good grade and the class would seem a little easier. By this time it was around mid-terms. Up until mid-terms, I was pretty confident that I could keep my grade up to or around a C. Once I got my mid-term back, I was reminded that I wasn’t that good at Spanish. Eventually, I was able to get my grade back up. Once the third and fourth quarter came around, I could understand the teacher because she started to speak English more frequently. What I learned from this experience is that you shouldn’t judge an experiences outcome until you actually experience yourself in that situation. I also learned that I was happy to be able to stop taking Spanish after I finished that year.

Football Concussions

The most common injury suffered by football players would be the concussion. A concussion is also known as an impact to the head that causes a change in one’s mental status. These changes in mental status include memory problems, dizziness, headaches, confusion, blurred vision, and in more serious cases, loss of consciousness. The time these symptoms can be suffered can be from a few minutes to up to a few days. The most common players to suffer concussions would most likely be lineman, even though it is possible for every player to suffer a concussion during the game. Concussions are not just a problem in the NFL and College football, but they have also become a problem in High School football. Although concussions have become a major concern in football, precautions have been made to make the game safer, like having safer equipment being used in each game.

Quote from Free Read Response

The quote that I picked from my book, “ParanoidPark” is, “Then the next row of huge steel wheels got to him. They cut him in half.” This quote helps me understand exactly what has happened. This is possible because the quote includes an example of imagery. The example of imagery in this quote would be the first sentence, “Then the next row of huge steel wheels got to him…” By reading this quote, the reader is able to picture train wheels running over a man. For this reason, it is easy to imagine this event happening. This quote also helps me understand that the author likes to use numerous details in his writing. This is true because instead of adding the detail of “huge steel wheels”, the author could have simply put “the next row of train wheels.” By using many details in his writing, the author is very descriptive in all of the messages he try’s to convey.

“All Hallow’s Eve” Response

Why did Joel’s wife try to kill herself? Joel and his wife seem pretty well off when it comes to income. Since Joel is a police officer, that seems like it would provide a sufficient amount of income, even without knowing wife’s occupation. Or could it have been an issue at work that leads her to try to commit suicide? If it had to do with her work, she might have just been too stressed and that lead to depression. Most suicides are caused by immense amounts of depression. She might have had a bad childhood experience that haunted her enough until suicide was an option to answer the problem. The only real way to answer this question would be to watch previous shows in the series to see if her suicide attempt is mentioned and explained.

November SAT Prompt

Many situations require different mindsets in order to be accomplished successfully. A situation that would require an individual to act quickly would be during battle. A soldier relies on acting quickly and instinctively. If this soldier spots an enemy advancing towards him with the intention to harm him, he will not lower his weapon and think about the best way to solve the threat. Instead, this soldier will raise his weapon and resolve the threat immediately. Besides this example, there are times when an urgent situation requires a more elaborate plan. This reaction can be represented by the plan to kill Osama Bin Laden. The plan to kill Osama Bin Laden took years of meticulous thinking to develop. It was not as simple as sending operatives into an unknown location in which the insurgent was believed to be hiding. The final plan required the operatives to know the layout of every room and also every person in the compound. These two examples show how there are many situations that require different mindsets in order to be accomplished successfully.

What is the significance of Booker T. Washington in the story?

Booker T. Washington was one of the many African Americans who favored the idea that African Americans should apply themselves just as whites did. He also believed that for a black man to get ahead in life, they must be hard workers, follow all rules and to be courteous to others. Washington himself showed this with his own actions. He became an educator and reformer, and was the first president of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. Washington was also the most influential speaker for African Americans from 1895 to 1915. The main character in “Battle Royal” was very similar to Booker T. Washington. This character is very much like Washington because he believes in the same principles Washington believed in. The main character even compared himself to Washington, “In those pre-invisible days I visualized myself as a potential Booker T. Washington.” This quote helps support the fact that the main character and Booker T. Washington are very much alike. This quote also shows that African Americans in that time period (early-1950’s), were not treated the same as whites. This is the reason why Booker T. Washington and comparably the main character believed in social reform.

How does the story define the concept of “success”?

In the beginning of “Battle Royal”, it is mentioned that the main character composed a great speech. As the story progresses, especially during the descriptiveness of the battle, the speech the main character gave was almost completely forgotten. The main characters speech was the reason the story was written because it symbolized a moment of triumph. This moment of triumph was when the main character was able to give his speech in front of the town’s most notable people with success. By doing this, the story attains the ability to define success. This successful speech is so notable because it is given by a black man to white men in the early 1950’s. This time period was synonymous with social discrimination. The main character was one of the first successful African Americans in his community. After the main character gave his speech to the numerous white audience members, he received a gift, “It was a scholarship to the state college for Negroes. My eyes filled with tears and I ran awkwardly off the floor.” This quote shows how the story is able to define success, by explaining the main characters reaction during his moment of triumph.
